Title: On complex coordinate transformations

Speaker: dr. Sajad Aghapour

Affiliation: Max Planck Institute

Abstract:

Since the Newman-Janis paper, we know an exciting complex coordinate transformation that maps Schwarzschild solution to Kerr and Reissner–Nordström to Kerr-Newman. A similar transformation maps the Coulomb field to a fascinating electromagnetic field dubbed “the magic field”. Other complex coordinate or mixed parameter-coordinate transformations map solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory into each other. I review some of these transformations and comment on the Newman-Janis as well as another complex transformation that preserves the Kerr-NUT set of solutions.

Title: How living matter self-organizes while breaking action-reaction symmetry

Speaker: Prof. Ramin Golestanian

Affiliation:  Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization & Oxford University

Description:

There are many ways to study life, and one that is particularly appealing to physicists is regarding it as self-organized active soft matter that is away from equilibrium “just the right way’’. In this Colloquium, I will discuss this notion, and provide a number of examples of how we can begin to put together simple systems – from basic ingredients that we fully understand – that would exhibit the kind of active behaviour we find in living systems. In particular, I will discuss the general class of chemical activity both as the source of non-equilibrium drive and the underlying mechanism for self-organization. Cells and microorganisms produce and consume all sorts of chemicals, from nutrients to signalling molecules. The same happens at the nanoscale inside cells themselves, where enzymes catalyze the production and consumption of the chemicals needed for life. I will discuss a generic mechanism by which such chemically-active particles, be it cells or enzymes or engineered synthetic colloids, can “sense” each other and ultimately self-organize in a multitude of ways. A peculiarity of these chemical-mediated interactions is that they break action-reaction symmetry: for example, one particle may be repelled from a second particle, which is in turn attracted to the first one, so that it ends up “chasing” it. Such chasing interactions allow for the formation of large clusters of particles that “swim” autonomously. Regarding enzymes, we find that they can spontaneously aggregate into clusters with precisely the right composition, so that the product of one enzyme is passed on, without lack or excess, to the next enzyme in the metabolic cascade. Finally, I will discuss how breaking the action-reaction symmetry can allow a system described by two scalar fields to exhibit spontaneous breaking of time translation, time-reversal, space translation, and polar symmetries.

Physics Colloquium

Title: Uncovering Energetic Process In The Interstellar/Intergalactic Medium With The Square Kilometre Array

Speaker: Dr. Fatemeh Tabatabaei

Affiliation: School of Astronomy, IPM

Abstract

Investigating the physics and energetic of the medium where galactic structures, on various scales, are formed is the most fundamental step to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies. Modern galaxy evolution models suggest gas accretion from the intergalactic medium (IGM) or from cosmic filaments as a mechanism to maintain star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN). Through gas heating and/or gas removal, these models also propose supernova feedback and AGN feedback as mechanisms to quench massive star formation. Observational studies, however, have not reached to a conclusive result showing that feedback can, in some cases, trigger star formation, leaving the issue as an open challenge. It seems that some basic concepts about the formation of structures in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the IGM are missed: What are physical parameters/agents governing the structure formation on various scales? How does the ISM/IGM energy balance change over cosmic time? The advent of the square kilometre array (SKA) and its instrumental capabilities tracing the most energetic ISM components has opened a new window shedding light on the issue. The SKA’s sensitive radio continuum observations will trace high-energy particles and magnetic fields not only in star forming regions and AGNs, but also in more quiescent regions in molecular clouds and diffuse IGM, enabling us to study the role of magnetic fields/cosmic rays in structure formation. Sensitive radio continuum observations on large scales may also bring constrains on the entity of dark matter mapped by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Dark Energy Camera (DECam).

Title: How fast are responses to “is it funny” and “is it strange” questions?

Speaker: Dr. Alessio Toraldo

AffiliationUniversity of Pavia, Italy

Description:

We aimed at investigating humor empirically by applying a cognitive-psychology approach, thus focusing on a specific humor task. Thirty-two participants listened to 30 jokes intermixed with 30 non-jokes that had an implausible ending, and decided whether or not each stimulus was funny (Humor Decision Task, HDT). In a control task, 30 plausible stories and 30 stories with an implausible ending were intermixed and participants decided whether or not each stimulus was “strange” (Implausibility Decision Task, IDT). Response times (RT) on correct responses indicated that the two tasks involve different cognitive operations: while “funny” responses were 256 ms faster than “not-funny” responses, “strange” responses took the same time as “not-strange” ones. IDT results could be explained by assuming that participants used the degree of semantic overlap between the setup and the ending of the story to select a response. As for HDT, we had two different cognitive accounts, the “recognition” and the “sequential attempts” hypotheses. On the former, participants activate long-term-memory (LTM) abstract representations of the jokes’ semantic structures; on the latter, participants use a trial-and-error strategy to solve the puzzle posed by a punchline that is not already available in LTM. RT on incorrect responses favoured the “sequential attempts” hypothesis.

Title: Supertranslation-Invariant Dressed Lorentz Charges

Speaker: R. Javadinezhad

Affiliation: New York University

Abstract

We present an explicit formula for Lorentz boosts and rotations that commute with BMS supertranslations in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Key to the construction is the use of infrared regularizations and of a unitary transformation that makes observables commute with soft degrees of freedom. We explicitly verify that our charges satisfy the Lorentz algebra and we check that they are consistent with expectations by evaluating them on the supertranslated Minkowski space and the supertranslated Kerr black hole.

IPM Webinar – Computational Neuroscience

Title: Brain controllability; mirage or reality

Speaker: Dr. Michele Allegra

Affiliation: Departiment of Physics and Astronomy “Galileo Galilei” and Padova Neuroscience Center, University of Padova, Italy

Abstract:

A major goal of applied neuroscience is to understand how to achieve controlled perturbations of brain activity through stimulation or brain-computer interfaces. This aim is particularly appealing for medical applications, where one wishes to restore normal activity patterns in subjects affected by neurological or psychiatric disorders. In recent years, several authors have proposed to frame this problem within control theory, a well established engineering paradigm dealing with the control of dynamical systems. In this framework, a model of the autonomous (uncontrolled) dynamics of the system is used to precisely devise external intervations that, in combiation with the autonomous dynamics, will steer the system towards desired targets. In a seminal work, Gu et al. (Nature communications 6.1 (2015)) proposed to use a linear model of macroscopic brain dynamics and apply the simple theory of linear controllability, arguing that external modulation of a single brain region might be sufficient to to steer the brain towards an arbitrarily chosen activity state – a finding that raised a large interest in this research topic. Several subsequent works, however, highlighted significant theoretical and practical limitations of this approach, suggesting that initial enthusiasm may have been overly optimistic. In this seminar, we build on previous criticism and our recent investigations to further clarify the main problems with the current approach to brain controllability. We will argue that, contrary to several statements in the literature, controlling whole-brain activity by locally perturbing one or even a few regions is, for all practical purposes, unfeasible. Finally, we shall briefly discuss possible alternative frameworks to achieve controlled manipulations of global brain activity.

Online Seminar – Einstein vs Einstein: The Great War

Title: Einstein vs Einstein: The Great War

Speaker: Prof. Niayesh Afshordi

Affiliation: Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Waterloo

Abstract:

Within the span of seven months in the midst of the Great War, Albert Einstein published two seminal papers, on “Quantum Emission and Absorption” and “Field Equations of Gravitation”, that laid the foundations of modern physics. Our century-long odyssey starts here, taking us through the rise of holography, fuzzballs, firewalls, quantum chaos, and gravitational wave astronomy. However, in the end, it will land us back within those fateful seven months, where Einstein’s July 1916 “Strahlungs-Emission und -Absorption nach der Quantentheorie” may prove to be the ultimate undoing of his December 1915 “Die Feldgleichungen der Gravitation”. I will lay down the theoretical and observational arguments on both sides of (the latest battle) in Einstein’s Great War.

Title: Visual perception of social relationship

Speaker: Liuba Papeo

Affiliation: Institut des Sciences Cognitives—Marc Jeannerod, UMR5229 ,Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) &

Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1

Abstract:

The social function of human vision appears clear from the highly specialized mechanisms for face and body perception. Here, I address the social function of vision with respect to the representation of human groups and their relationships.

I will present a set of behavioral, fMRI and EEG studies addressing how the representation of social interaction emerges from object perception, through the analysis of spatial relations between multiple faces and bodies in visual scenes.

First, I will discuss new behavioral phenomena suggesting that human vision encodes socially relevant spatial relations between people (i.e., bodies) with the same efficiency and high specialization of face perception. Second, I will discuss how a network of visual brain areas may give rise to the earliest rudimentary representation of social interaction, based on the mere physical structure of the input, before inferential processes kick in.

Title: Discrete Gravity

Speaker: V. Mukhanov

Affiliation: Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany

Abstract:

We assume that the points in volumes smaller than an elementary volume (which may have a Planck size) are indistinguishable in any physical experiment. This naturally leads to a picture of a discrete space with a finite number of degrees of freedom per elementary volume. In such discrete spaces, each elementary cell is completely characterized by displacement operators connecting a cell to the neighboring cells and by the spin connection. We define the torsion and curvature of the discrete spaces and show that in the limiting case of vanishing elementary volume the standard results for the continuous curved differentiable manifolds are completely reproduced.

Description:

Early detection and monitoring of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients are key to tackling dementia and providing benefits to patients, caregivers, healthcare providers and society. Digital biomarkers can help identify and monitor subtle cognitive changes in individuals at risk of developing dementia. Furthermore, such tests are able to benefit from advanced analytics for more accurate and personalised results. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are being increasingly used for applications in Dementia research. We developed the Integrated Cognitive Assessment (ICA) which is a 5-min, self-administered, computerised cognitive assessment tool based on a rapid categorisation task. The ICA is innately independent of language and culture, and can generalise across populations without the need for collection of population-specific normative data.
